BERKELEY - Cal senior linebacker Matt Beck will undergo surgery on his left foot Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season, head coach Tom Holmoe announced Thursday.
Beck, who was rated the No. 9 inside linebacker in the country by The Sporting News, suffered a mid-foot sprain midway through the first quarter of Cal's game at Nebraska last Saturday. Beck saw two specialists this week, and they both concurred that surgery was necessary to stabilize the joint. Rehabilitation is expected to take 4-6 months.
"Matt's handled adversity before, but his may be tougher because it was his senior year," Holmoe said. "I'm confident he'll overcome it. There's no question in my mind he'll play in the NFL."
Beck (6-4, 235) ends his Cal career 10th on the school's all-time tackles list with 238. He also had 48 career tackles for loss to rank tied for third at Cal. A second team All-Pac-10 choice last year as a junior, he was an honorable mention pick as both a freshman and a sophomore.
Junior J.J. Jimenez is expected to take Beck's spot in the lineup. Against the Cornhuskers last week, the 6-0, 210-pounder had four tackles and recovered a fumble.
