SEATTLE, Wash. - California extended its four-game winning streak Saturday as the Golden Bears defeated No. 13 ranked Washington, 7-1, at Washington Softball Stadium.
Cal (32-27, 6-11) made its presence known early in the game as junior Julie Meyer tripled to left center, sending home freshmen Vernae Sevilla and Bernice Masaniai in the second inning. Masaniai would later homer in the fourth inning. The Bears dominated in the field as well, holding the Huskies scoreless until the fifth inning.
In a superior pitching performance through the sixth inning, freshman Marissa Drewrey picked up the victory, allowing just four hits and one run. Sophomore Lauren Frankiewicz replaced Drewrey in the circle to finish the game. In two innings of work, Frankiewicz was also strong, allowing three hits and keeping the Huskies off the scoreboard.
Caitlin Noble took the loss for Washington (33-14, 10-7), as she allowed four of Cal's seven runs.
Masaniai and freshman Shannon Houston added two more runs for the Bears in the sixth inning, as both scored off of a hit by Sevilla. Sophomore Gina Leomiti smacked a two-run homer, as she and junior Erika Racklin crossed home plate on the four-bagger, in the final inning.
Cal will face Washington (33-14, 10-7) again Sunday afternoon at 1p.m. in Seattle.
