RYKKINN, NORWAY - The California men's basketball team was edged, 69-64, by the Norwegian National Team on Wed., Aug. 17, at Rykkinnhallen Leirdueveien 73. Despite sophomore forward Richard Solomon's15-point, six-rebound performance, the Golden Bears faced a tough, physical zone defense that held the team to just one made three-pointer, all game.

Sophomore guard Justin Cobbs had another solid outing with 13 points while senior forward Harper Kamp poured in 12 points of his own. Against the zone, sophomore guard Allen Crabbemanaged just five shots, but was able to put up seven points for the Bears to go with his five boards.

Junior guard Brandon Smith contributed nine points and junior forward Robert Thurmancontinued his consistent play with six points and five rebounds, off the bench.

Cal came out, on point, as starters Cobbs, Crabbe, Kamp, Smith, and Solomon, built a 24-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. Though the game began as a fast-paced affair, things began to slow at the end of the first stanza as each team burned through the clock to run their offenses.

Norway responded in the second quarter to outscore the Bears, 25-12, and grab a 37-36 lead heading into the halftime break. By the end of the fourth quarter, Cal found itself down by seven points, 56-49. Though the Bears fought back, time expired as Norway secured the five-point victory, 69-64.

The squad will have two days without games as it travels to Copenhagen, Denmark. There, the Bears will face the Danish National Team in two games at the Farum Arena Stavnsholtvej 41. The first game takes place at 5 p.m. (8 a.m. PT) on Sat., Aug. 20, with a rematch set for 1 p.m. (4 a.m. PT) on Sun., Aug. 21.
