BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 4-ranked California men's swimming and diving team won 10 of the meet's first 11 swimming events, including two victories by junior Andrew Godbe, on the way to a 152-127 dual meet victory over Pac-10 opponent Arizona State Friday, Jan. 22, at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears also captured the meet's opening men's race, the 400 medley relay (3:20.29, freshman Austin Brown, sophomore Nolan Koon, junior Guy Barnea, freshman Tom Shields), had eight different individual winners, and swam the final three races as exhibitions to improve their dual meet record to 3-0.
Godbe, from Mission Viejo, won the 100 breast in 56.10 and the 200 breast in a career-best 2:02.40. Other individual winners for Cal included freshman Nick Trowbridge in the 1000 free (9:34.47), Koon in the 200 free (1:41.36), sophomore Martin Liivamagi in the 100 back (50.65), sophomore Mark Prior in the 200 fly (1:51.95), Barnea in the 50 free (20.81), junior Daniel Smith in the 100 free (46.99) and senior Aaron Casey in the 500 free (4:38.05).
Arizona State's Xavier Mohammed was the Sun Devil's lone winner in the swimming events with a first place in the 200 back (1:49.10). ASU's Riley McCormick won both the one-meter (348.75) and three-meter (410.85) diving competition. Cal junior Thomas Henninger placed third on the three-meter board with a score of 344.93.
Cal men's swimming and diving team will now turn around and battle No. 3-ranked Arizona, Saturday, Jan. 23 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Wildcats and the Bears are both ranked in the top five in the nation and feature defending NCAA champions Nathan Adrian (50 and 100 free) and Damir Dugonjic (100 breast) for Cal, and Jean Basson (500 free) for Arizona.
