The California Golden Bears finished third behind the No. 13 Oregon State Beavers and No. 5 Arkansas Razorbacks in a tri-meet at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. Friday night. The Beavers edged the Razorbacks by .025 points, 195.950 to 195.925. The Bears posted a team total of 185.250.
The Bears, competing short-handed with just six gymnasts in the meet, were led by junior Sophia Hocini. Hocini posted an all-aroud score of 38.150, finishing seventh overall. Hocini had the highest event score for the Bears, scoring a 9.700 on the beam. Hocini scored a 9.650 on the bars and a 9.625 on the vault.
Sophomore Stephanie Cheng finished right behind Hocini in the all-around with a 37.625 total. She also scored her highest numbers on the beam, with a 9.600. Sophomore Avery Gee had a pair of 9.625's, one on the vault, the other on the beam. Senior Joanna Bennet scored a 9.675 on the bars. Bennett, who had competed in just one event last week, participated in all four events this week. Freshman Erica Varon also took on the full slate of four events after competing in three last week.
The pair of losses drops Cal to 0-4 on the season. The Bears will have another tough roadtrip next weekend as they head to Los Angeles for a Sunday, February 25 meet against the No. 3 UCLA Bruins.
