TEMPE, ARIZ. -

The No. 25 California Golden Bears posted a team score of three-over in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional, finishing the first day in ninth place.

The Bears had a tough start to the day. In the first four holes, a different Cal player logged a double-bogey on each hole, putting the team into a quick deficit. Senior Allison Goodman was the true exception, scoring a pair of birdies in her first four holes to jump off to a hot start. Goodman ended the day with six birdies and looked to end her round with a five-under. A bogey on 18 set her back, but still sent her into the clubhouse with a four-under 68, tying her for fourth place among individuals. The 68 was her second lowest round of the season, following a second-round 67 she shot at the season-opening Ram Classic in Colorado.

Pia Halbig, looking for her fourth-straight top-ten finish in a major tournament this season, recovered from a slow start, turning things up on the back nine. Halbig was two-over at the turn, thanks to a double on the third hole. She posted birdies on 13, 14, 16, and 17, flirting with a one-under for the day until she, too, bogeyed 18. She ended her round with an even-par 72, tying her for 18th place among the individuals. Junior Roseanne Niven played one of her best rounds of the season to finish third for the Bears with a three-over 75. Diane Kwon was the fourth scoring golfer for the Bears with a four-over, 76. Senior Shannon Yocum posted a +5, 77.

The Bears will need to finish in eighth place or higher to advance to the NCAA National Championships. The Bears 291 puts them in ninth place, two strokes behind the four teams tied for fifth place in the tournament with a 289. Arizona State, playing on their home course, has a 14-stroke lead over second place. ASU has a 15-under 273. The three teams tied for second place are at even par. Belen Mozo of USC leads the individuals with a six-under, 66, two strokes ahead of Allison Goodman.

The Bears will be back in action Friday afternoon with their first player teeing off on the tenth hole at 11:30 a.m.. Live stats will be available at golfstat.com.
