California head coach Ben Braun
On the things Cal tried to improve on coming into tonight's game following Thursday's loss to ASU:
I thought we had some opportunities, and I thought we did some things a lot better than we did on Thursday, specifically to go out and get a 32-20 advantage on the boards. We asked our guys to have a presence - that's important. We asked our post guys to have a presence tonight. We had 36 points in the paint - that's a figure we can live with on any night. And we asked our team to get back in transition and we did - we gave up two points off the fast break. So we solved those areas in a very short turnaround.
On the effect Cal's 17 turnovers had on tonight's result:
We have got to do a better job taking care of the basketball. Turnovers plagued us - I felt that they were unforced turnovers in terms of decision-making. We can't allow turnovers to take away the opportunities we had to score. We're scoring at a 52-, 54-percent pace, so scoring is not an issue. We've got to tale care of the basketball so we score more - really, two or three more baskets in this game.
On Jamal Boykin's impact as Cal improved its rebounding in the second half:
We went with a big lineup. We had Jamal at the wing - he gives you the extra man, goes for six rebounds. That makes a big difference. And I thought Jamal helped us too on the offensive end, scored around the paint, knocked down a shot, got to the foul line. Those are important stats.
On the defensive adjustments made to neutralize Chase Budinger, who scored only four points after hitting for 18 in the first half.
I thought Eric (Vierneisel) did a great job on Budinger. We went to the zone, matched up and we played him really tough. He's a phenomenal player. He showed you what he can do in the first half - he single-handedly kept their team in the game, as did (Jerryd) Bayless. But we did a better job both on Bayless and on Budinger in the second half.
Arizona Interim Head Coach Kevin O'Neill
We are very fortunate to get out of here with a win; Cal did a great job keeping us off balance the second half. I like their team; they are very good. We have come off a couple one possession losses, against Arizona State and Stanford. Winning this one gives us a chance to hang in there with the Pac-10.
On Cal Forward Ryan Anderson: I was in the NBA. Anderson is going to be in the NBA some day. He is very good.
On Arizona's game plan: We ended up going small. None of our 4 men could guard Anderson at all. We were struggling against the zone. Chase (Budinger) had some good shots. We gave up a couple baskets at the end when it looked like we should have stretched the game out.
On the way Arizona closed out the game: In all honesty, we have managed the last few games very well and lost. This game we managed well and made some shots to win it at the end.
