BERKELEY - California men's basketball head coach Mike Montgomery announced the team's 2011-12 schedule on Mon., Aug. 8. The Golden Bears will face five non-conference opponents that won at least 20 games last season and 10 that received bids to the NCAA tournament. In the Pac-12's inaugural season, Cal will host nine conference games out of an 18-game home schedule at Haas Pavilion.
Fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2011-12 Bears in exhibition action against UC San Diego on Tue., Nov. 1. Cal opens the regular season when UC Irvine visits Berkeley for a game on Fri., Nov. 11.
The Bears will host two games as part of the 2011 College Basketball Experience Classic tournament. George Washington and Austin Peay visit Haas Pavilion before Cal hits the road for a game against Georgia in Kansas City, Mo. on Mon., Nov. 21. On the other side of the CBE Classic bracket, the Bears will draw either Notre Dame or Missouri for a game on Tue., Nov. 22.
Cal opens up December when it heads south to match up against San Diego State--a 2011 Sweet Sixteen squad--on Sun., Dec. 4. The Bears return to the comforts of the Bay Area for four home games before they wrap up their non-conference schedule on the road with a desert bout against UNLV on Fri., Dec. 23.
The squad celebrates the New Year with a new conference when it hosts USC and UCLA for games on Dec. 29 and 31. The Bears will get their first Pac-12 road test when they head up to Oregon for a pair of games in January.
Because the Pac-12 schedule will feature 18 games, Cal will play Washington and Washington State on the road, Jan. 19 and 21, and host Arizona and Arizona State for games Feb. 2 and 4.
The Bears will run the court against traditional rival Stanford on Jan. 29 at Haas Pavilion, and wrap the regular season with a rematch against the Cardinal on Sun., Mar. 4, at Maples Pavilion.
The Pac-12 will host its first tournament at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with first-round matches on Wed., Mar. 7. The conference tournament championship game takes place on Sat., Mar. 10, before the NCAA makes its selections for the national tournament on Sun., Mar. 11, 2012.
15 of Cal's opponents played in a postseason tournament last year: Arizona, Georgia, Missouri, Notre Dame, San Diego State, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV, USC, and Washington were each selected to the NCAA tournament. The NIT featured Colorado, McNeese State, and Washington State; and Oregon, San Jose State, and Weber State were all selected to the CBI.
Cal is coming off an 18-15 season in which it advanced to its third straight postseason under Montgomery. The Bears reached the second round the National Invitational Tournament. The squad welcomes back its top three scorers from a year ago; Jorge Gutierrez, Harper Kamp, and the 2011 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Allen Crabbe. Gutierrez and Kamp were Pac-10 All-Conference selections, as well. In addition, Cal welcomes freshmen forwards David Kravish (Lee's Summitt, Mo.) and Christian Behrens (Kent, Wash.) to the team in 2011-12.
