Cal Field Hockey Opens with 2-0 Win

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Behind a goal and an assist from senior Megan Sainsbury, the Cal field hockey team opened is season with a 2-0 victory over Southwest Missouri State Saturday afternoon.

Sainsbury, who led the Bears in scoring last year with six goals and seven assists, tallied her first goal of the '99 season with 5:49 left in the first half. She then assisted on a goal by Amber Stockstill midway through the second period.

That assist was the 18th of Sainsbury's career, tying her with head coach Shellie Onstead for the Cal career record. Onstead compiled 18 assists from 1980-82.

In a defensive battle against SMSU, Cal had just nine shots, but limited SMSU to only three.

Cal continues play in Springfield, Mo., against St. Louis Sunday and Davis & Elkins Monday before returning to the Bay Area.
