No. 3 Cal Defeats No. 15 Santa Clara, 18-2

DAVIS, CALIF. - In its second win of the day, the No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team (8-1) dominated No. 15 Santa Clara, 18-2, Sunday (Sept. 25) at the Aggie Shootout at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis. In a morning match the Golden Bears had defeated Fresno Pacific, 17-1.

Senior Ivan Rackov paced Cal with five goals against the Broncos, while true freshman Aleksa Saponjic added three goals and senior Luka Saponjic, junior Marin Balarin, sophomore Collin Smith and junior Ayal Keren scored two goals apiece. Sophomore Hunter Gettelfinger and redshirt freshman Blake Kelly also tallied goals for the Bears.

Junior goalie Justin Parsons notched eight saves against Santa Clara, including blocking a five-meter penalty shot in the first period. Cal had scored five goals in each of the first three quarters before shutting out the Broncos, 3-0, in the fourth period. It was the second time the Bears had topped Santa Clara this year, defeating the Broncos, 21-3, Sept. 3 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Against Fresno Pacific, senior Matt Golden tallied five goals and Kelly added three goals. Senior goalie Wil Toppen had six saves in the first half, and sophomore goalie Michael Boggan added three saves in the second half. Sophomore Tommy Gilfillan and redshirt freshmen Matt Russell and John Yeager all had a pair of goals for the Bears as well.

"Our defense this weekend was excellent," said Cal coach Kirk Everist. "The guys really worked together and took pride on the defensive end. We will need that same focus and effort as we move into next weekend's tournament."

The Bears will next battle the top teams in the nation we they compete Oct. 1-2 at the SoCal Invitational in Long Beach and Los Alamitos. Cal opens the SoCal Invite playing Santa Clara at 11:10 a.m. in Los Alamitos on Saturday, Oct. 1. If the Bears win that match, they face the winner of Pacific and Loyola Marymount at 5:50 p.m. Oct. 1 in Los Alamitos. Cal had defeated Pacific, 8-6, this past Saturday in Stockton.
