San Jose, Calif. - Making up a double header the day after rain had drenched San Jose State Field, the Bears' and Spartans' hitters played like their feet were stuck in the mud. On a day dominated by pitching, Cal trumped San Jose State with two outstanding complete game shutouts from Kelly Anderson and Kristina Thorson.
Game 1 was scoreless until the top of the third. Anderson started the rally by singling to left and pinch runner Gwen Arafiles was advanced to second on a sacrifice. Lindsay James' shot was botched by the shortstop and Arafiles raced home with the first run.
In the fifth, Cal added two more. Alex Sutton started a two-out rally with a single to right center. Vicky Galindo and James each followed with singles to load the bases. Looking for some insurance, Kaleo Eldredge slapped a double down the right field line, scoring two.
Anderson needed very little support on this day. She allowed no runs, four hits and struck out six in seven complete innings. Her strikeouts couldn't have been more timely than in the first inning, when she whiffed the side with runners on second and third.
Game 2 featured more dominant pitching on both sides. Thorson and Kelli McCollister locked up in what was a duel until someone flinched first.
Inning after inning went by until the teams reached the 10th. Jessica Pamanian reached third base with only one out after being sacrificed over. Sutton sent a fly over the infield that was deep enough to score Pamanian from third.
Thorson made sure the one run would hold up. She had a no-hitter through nine innings and faced one batter over the minimum, allowing one hit in 10 shutout innings. In the 10th, with two out and the tying run on second, Thorson whiffed the final batter to end the game. Yet again, Thorson was altogether dominant, striking out 10 with her rocket arm.
Next up, California travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to participate in the UNLV Tournament, Feb. 13-15.
