BERKELEY - The No. 24 California men's soccer team defeated Stanford, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears have now won 8 of the last 11 meetings against the Cardinal. Cal improved to 8-4-1, 3-2 on the season, while Stanford fell to 4-4-5, 1-2-2.
Cal got on the board in the 29th minute. Junior Pat Marion scored the goal with assists from freshman Servando Carrasco and senior Javier Ayala-Hil. Carrasco fed the ball to Marion on a cross pass to the far side and Marion booted the ball right past the keeper.
The lone goal proved to be all the Bears would need to gain the win, as Cal's stingy defense once again rose to the occasion, posting its sixth shutout of the season. The Cardinal only managed two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by sophomore keeper Stefan Frei. Cal outshot Stanford, 9-7.
The Bears have next week off and return to action against San Diego State Friday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
