Final Stats

The No. 9 California women's swimming team (7-2, 3-1) set two new pool and dual meet records in its upset over fourth-ranked USC, 167-133, Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The Golden Bears started the meet off strong with a record-breaking performance in the 400 medley relay. The relay team of freshman Helen Silver, senior Staciana Stitts, junior Natalie Coughlin and junior Danielle Becks, ran the race in 3:39.86, breaking the Spieker pool record and setting a new dual meet record. A Stanford 400 medley relay team held the previous record set in 2001.

Coughlin added another record-breaking swim, winning the 100 fly in 51.88, besting her previous pool and dual meet record of 52.36 set in 2001. Coughlin's time in the 100 fly marked her best time in that event all season. She also added wins in the 200 free (1:47.24) and 200 fly (1:56.04).

Sophomore Marcelle Miller also etched her name into the Cal record books with her inspiring swim in the 200 breast. Posting a time of 2:16.81 with a third-place finish, Miller's mark stands as the sixth-best on Cal's all-time top 10 list.

Stitts, Becks and Silver rounded out the victories for the Bears with two wins apiece. Stitts swept the 100 (1:01.05) and 200 breast (2:13.57), while Becks was the day's top sprinter in the 50 (23.38) and 100 free (50.76). Silver won the 100 (55.79) and 200 back (1:58.25). Each of those times were season-bests for Cal swimmers in those events.

The sprint freestyle races were among Cal's strongest of the day, as the Bears went one-two-three in touching the wall in the 50 free and took the first, third and fourth spots in the 100 free. Freshman Whitney Rockwell placed second in the 50 free (23.55) as senior Michelle Harper came in third (23.70) and freshman Cheryl Anne Bingaman finished in fourth-place (23.87). Bingaman placed third (52.01) and Harper finished fourth in the 100 free (52.27).

On the diving side, senior Christina Flynn finished third in both the one-meter (243.22) and three-meter (266.62) competitions.

The Bears are back in action again tomorrow, Sat., Feb. 1 to take on the UCLA Bruins at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The meet begins at noon.
