Recap | Box Score

Cal Coach Diane Ninemire
On the game
"Maine came out and played exceptionally tough defense. I give them a lot of credit for coming and playing tough. They gave us all we wanted today. We have to come out and play well tomorrow against Mississippi State."

On Maine pitcher Sarah Bennis
"She's an off-speed pitcher, and you have to be patient and keep your weight behind the hit. Our players were in front of it at times and just getting a piece of the ball. When you play your first game at regionals, your adrenaline is pumping. You want to do well. I think tomorrow we need to come out more relaxed and just do the things that we do well."

Cal Pitcher Kristina Thorson
On her performance
"(Catcher) Haley (Woods) mixed the pitches really well. She was mixing them up and down, mixing them out and in and also adding a little off-speed here and there. Credit goes to Haley because she was the one calling the pitches."

Maine Coach Deb Smith
On Maine's game plan
"Especially early on, we wanted runners in scoring position. The pitcher was not overpowering in terms of speed. We haven't seen a lot of speed this year, so we felt like we could handle a movement pitcher as long as we stayed aggressive. We wanted to get a runner to second or third and try to do something, but we just couldn't get it done."

On Maine's defense
"The defense broke down a little bit, but we certainly don't typically make errors quite like that. I think it was more a disappointment in themselves. Once the first run was scored, they (the Black Bears) didn't quite rebound mentally as well (as we would have liked). We were still believing we could win at that point. It took us a little bit to get back and re-focused. Yes, the defense hurt, but we didn't score anyway. I don't expect us to make those errors tomorrow."

"I don't know if the entire team came in here thinking that we could win the game. Today, knowing that they played that well against the No. 2 team in the country, that's a springboard for tomorrow. There is no reason that any one of the 23 girls on this roster shouldn't believe that they could take a game from Iowa tomorrow."

Maine Pitcher Sarah Bennis
On her performance
"I didn't have a scouting report on them. I just wanted to go out there and throw my game. That was pretty much the game plan. I just wanted to keep them off-balance as much as I could. I was just trying to keep my cool and keep throwing strikes to keep the team in it."
