NOTING THE BEARS: This week, the No. 1 ranked (tied with USC) Cal women's water polo team (24-4, 7-2 in the MPSF) will travel to the Northern California Regional Qualifier at Pacific's Chris Kjeldsen Pool as the No. 1 seeded team. Cal has won 13 matches in a row after capturing the MPSF Tournament, Apr. 9-11 at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreational Center. The Bears defeated San Diego State, 9-8 in overtime; Pacific, 8-2; UC Santa Barbara, 5-2; Stanford, 5-3 and No. 1 ranked USC, 3-2, in the championship match. Cal was led by sophomore Beth Irwin (Menlo Park, CA), who scored nine goals in the five matches, and senior co-captain Melanie vonHartitzsch (Tulsa, OK), who scored six goals during the tournament, including two of the Bears three goals in the championship match. Juniors Colette Glinkowski (Danville, CA), Heather Petri (Orinda, CA) sophomore goalie Fana Fuqua (Menlo Park, CA) also played well. Glinkowski and Petri each scored four goals and Fuqua, filling in for an ill senior goalie Evi Schueller (Mountain View, CA), played in four of the five tournament matches and had 24 saves in 112 minutes. Cal continues to be led by Glinkowski, who has 52 goals. VonHartitzsch is second with 35 goals and Petri is third in scoring with 28 goals. Following the MPSF Tournament, the 1999 All-Federation Selections were announced. Glinkowki was named Co-Player of the Year (along with USC's Bernice Orwig) and was a first team selection. Petri and vonHartitzsch were second team All-MPSF selections and Schueller, Irwin and freshman Breena Fleener (Leucadia, CA) were honorable mention picks. In three years as a varsity sport, the Cal women's water polo team has a record of 113-24 (.825) and has placed second nationally to UCLA the past three years. The Bears were 27-6 last season.

HEAD COACH PETER ASCH: One of the greatest players in American water polo history, Peter Asch (30-6, .833), was named head coach of Cal's women's water polo team last August. Asch, who earned All-America honors in water polo at Cal three straight years (1967-69), later won a bronze medal as part of the U.S. Olympic team in 1972 and was inducted into the Cal Hall of Fame in 1997. He served as Cal's interim head coach during the collegiate national tournament last April and helped the Bears finish second nationally behind UCLA, including an upset of then second-ranked Stanford in the national semifinals.

COLETTE GLINKOWSKI: Cal's junior driver has earned several honors this season as she has been selected MPSF Co-Player of the Year, the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the UC San Diego Invitational (Feb. 14), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week (Feb. 15) and Most Valubale Player of the Victor Aloha Classic (Mar. 27). Glinkowski scored 15 goals in five matches in the San Diego Tournament, including scoring five goal in Cal's 6-3 semifinal upset of then No. 1 ranked Stanford. In the Victor Aloha Classic, Glinkowski scored seven goals in two matches with three goals in the championship match victory over Hawaii. She has led the Bears in scoring in 15 of the team's 28 matches this season. She was the team's second leading scorer in '98 with 46 goals and has already tallied 142 goals in her career. Last season, Glinkowski was a National Championship second team selection, MPSF second team and MPSF All-Tournament Honorable Mention.
