STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 4 California men's swimming team won two of six events at a triple distance meet against No. 2 Stanford Wednesday afternoon at the Avery Aquatics Complex at Stanford, Calif.
In the non-scoring triple distance meet, swimmers competed in all events of one stroke category. The swimmer with the fastest cumulative times of the events was crowned the winner of that stroke. For the Bears, senior Alex Lim and junior Duje Draganja were victorious against the Cardinal for the second consecutive year in their respective strokes. Lim won the backstroke, while Draganja won the sprint freestyle.
Lim finished first in the backstroke with an overall time of 2:54.25. He recorded individual times of 22.26 in the 50, 47.37 in the 100 and 1:44.62 in the 200 back. Draganja's cumulative time of 2:45.00 was the fastest among both heats of the sprint free. He clocked times of 20.29 in the 50, 44.82 in the 100 and 1:39.89 in the 200 free.
Other Bears that ranked among the top three finishers included freshman Patrick O'Neil (2nd, butterfly), junior Caleb Rowe (2nd, breaststroke), junior John Dorr (2nd, IM), sophomore Ricky Barbosa (3rd, breaststroke), senior Renato Gueraldi (3rd, sprint free) and junior Steve Rehrmann (3rd, IM).
O'Neil earned his second-place finish in the butterfly (3:01.50) by swimming times of 22.94 in the 50, 49.64 in the 100 and 1:48.92 in the 200 fly. Rowe finished second in the breaststroke (3:24.64), clocking times of 25.84 in the 50, 56.76 in the 100 and 2:02.04 in the 200 breast. Barbosa finished just behind Rowe in the breast with a cumulative time of 3:26.63. His individual times were 25.89 in the 50, 56.70 in the 100 and 2:04.04 in the 200 breast.
In the IM, Dorr placed second with a total time of 6:40.33, while Rehrmann finished third in 6:45.12. Dorr swam times of 51.38 in the 50, 1:50.06 in the 100 and 3:58.89 in the 200 IM, while Rehrmann's times were 52.10 in the 50, 1:51.38 in the 100 and 4:01.64 in the 200 IM. Gueraldi took third place in the sprint free with a cumulative time of 2:48.06. His individual marks were 20.25 in the 50, 45.41 in the 100 and 1:42.40 in the 200 free.
Up next for Cal is the Bears' annual alumni meet. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21 at 3:30 p.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
