BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 3-ranked California men's water polo team (10-1) scored 33 goals in two matches Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex, defeating No. 20 UC Santa Cruz, 16-2, and Santa Clara, 17-6, in a pair of non-league matches. Junior captain Brian Bacharach and sophomore Zac Monsees both notched five goals on the day for Cal.
In the UC Santa Cruz contest, the Golden Bears were led by two goals apiece from Bacharach, Trent Calder, Monsees, Kevin Platshon and Jeff Tyrrell. Cal pulled away by scoring five goals in both the second and third periods. The Bears also tallied the final 10 goals of the match after the Banana Slugs' William Sause scored with 1:58 left in the first half.
Cal goalies Nate Bennett and Marc Vacquier had two and three saves, respectively, while Joseph Lyons had eight saves for UC Santa Cruz. John Mann, Tom Kurth, Michael Sharf, Mike Hayes, Brian Kinsel and Jonathan Richina also scored for the Bears against the Banana Slugs.
In Cal's win over Santa Clara, Monsees and Bacharach paced the Bears with three goals apiece. Mann, Kurth, Tyrrell and Sharf added two goals each, and Andrija Vasiljevic, Calder and Jon Marshall scored for Cal as well. Vacquier, who played the entire second and third periods as the Bears' goalie, finished with five saves. Cal dominated the Broncos by scoring five goals in the first and third periods, and ended up scoring the last six points of the match.
Cal will next travel to UCLA on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a match against the defending national champion Bruins at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Starting time for the match is TBA. Earlier this season, the Bears upended UCLA, 8-7 in overtime, Sept. 18 in the third place match of the SoCal Open in Irvine, Calif.
