STANFORD, Calif. - Cal women's tennis concluded play on the courts of the Taube Family Tennis Stadium today at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional in Stanford, Calif. No. 10-seed senior Cristina Visico represented the Bears in the singles draw final, facing fourth-seeded junior Jessica Nguyen of Stanford but fell short in a comeback bid, losing 6-1 and then 7-5. However, having made it to the final, Visico earns a berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio. She will be joining fellow Cal senior Susie Babos, who qualifies for the championships by virtue of winning the All-American Championship title.
In doubles play, the eighth-seeded pair of junior Claire Ilcinkas and freshman Marina Cossou faced the No. 1 doubles seed in one semifinal, falling in an 8-2 decision to Fresno State's Tinesta Rowe and Melanie Gloria. As a singles player, Gloria is rated No. 3 in the nation in the preseason rankings. Only the doubles finals winner in regional competition is granted automatic entry to the ITA Indoor Championships.
The Bears return to action at the ITA National Indoor Championships, represented by senior's Babos and Visico Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio. The ITA will announce the complete draw on their website www.itatennis.com tomorrow (Oct. 23). Cal players not competing in Columbus will see action at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational from Nov. 2-4 in Tempe, Ariz. with draws and schedules to be announced at a later date.
California Women's Tennis Head Coach - Amanda Augustus
On the Bears' play at the regional tournament
"Overall, the team had a great weekend and what we've done so far is certainly something that we can keep building on. Other positives from our play were that we got to try new doubles pairs and to have Claire Ilcinkas and Marina Cossou advance to the semifinal is remarkable. At this point in the season, to know that we have two of the top 32 players entering the Indoor Championships, we're very happy with those results."
On senior Cristina Visico's improvement this season
"This is a very big deal for Cristina. For someone who was mostly playing in the five and six spot just last spring to have improved this vastly speaks greatly to all the hard work she has put in to become the player we all know she can be."
On Visico qualifying for the ITA Indoor Championships
"Coming in, I don't think Cristina's goal was to win this tournament but to come away from the weekend qualifying for Columbus, I couldn't be more pleased that she accomplished more than what she had set out to do."
California Women's Tennis Senior Cristina Visico
On her expectations entering the regional tournament
"I thought I played really well this weekend. I had a hard week and my shoulder had been bothering me so I didn't feel that great coming in to the tournament. I think the difference was that I had been working very hard to strengthen my shoulder and it all came together this weekend."
On her motivation, reaching the regional final
"The fact that this was my last tournament gave me a lot of motivation to play well and sort of leave a mark here at Cal. Jessie (Stanford's Jessica Nguyen) played really well today too but I'm very proud of how I did on the whole."
On the upcoming ITA National Indoor Championships
"I've never made it to the ITA Indoors before so it's really meaningful to qualify now as a senior in my last year. Even though indoors isn't one of my best surfaces, I have incentive to work hard, and to play well so I look forward to getting out to Columbus in a couple weeks. I'm very excited."
