BERKELEY - Cal sophomore forward Gabriel Hughes has requested a transfer and has received a release from his scholarship obligations, head coach Ben Braun announced Tuesday.

"It came down to playing time," Hughes said. "This year wasn't fully what I expected it to be. Hopefully, I'll get that opportunity at another school. I had a good run at Cal. The coaching staff and my teammates have been supportive, and I thank them for my two years here."

Hughes, a 6-10, 215-pounder from Carson, Calif., and Bishop Montgomery High School, played in 21 of 32 games for the Bears this past season. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds, while blocking 10 shots and shooting 70.4 percent from the floor. His best game came in a win at Washington State when he scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. As a freshman in 2000-01, Hughes averaged 0.4 ppg and 0.6 rpg in 19 games.

Hughes said he plans to take several recruiting trips over the next few weeks and does not yet have a new school in mind.

"I knew that Gabe was particularly frustrated with his lack of playing time, which was understandable," Braun said. "I felt that Gabe had made tremendous progress over the past two years, but he has expressed an interest in pursuing other opportunities with another program."
