BERKELEY, Calif. -- Former Cal All-American and current Golden Bear assistant coach Gillian Boxx has been named to the U.S. National Team that will compete in the World Softball Championships July 20-30 in Japan.
Boxx, a catcher who was also a member of the U.S. gold medal-winning Olympic squad in 1996, is one of 11 players from the Olympic team competing at the World Championships.
The United States is 33-0 in World Championship play dating back to 1986, which includes an unprecedented three straight titles.
At stake at the World Championships are five berths to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and the United States needs to finish in the Top 4 to guarantee itself a spot in the Games.
Boxx played for the Bears from 1992-95, earning All-America honors each season and helping Cal to a tie for fifth place in the 1992 College World Series. As a senior, she batted a school-record .466 with seven home runs and 38 RBI. After graduating from Cal and starting for the Olympic team in 1996, Boxx was an assistant coach at Notre Dame in 1997 before returning to her alma mater in 98.
