No. 5 Cal Splits Two Games at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - After dropping its first game of the competitive Stanford Invitational to No. 2 USC, 9-3, Saturday morning, the No. 5 California women's water polo team rebounded with an 11-7 victory over No. 11 Arizona State on Saturday afternoon. California now sits at 5-2 overall and will play No. 3 Stanford on Sunday morning at 8 a.m.

No. 2 USC jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the No. 5 Golden Bears in the first period to take the 9-3 decision in the first match of the Stanford Invitational on Saturday morning. The Women of Troy extended their first quarter lead by shutting out the Cal offenses while tacking on two goals in the second stanza to take a 6-1 lead into the halftime break. The Bears matched USC's one goal in the third period to bring Cal within five, 7-2. USC outscored the Bears 2-1 in the final quarter to take the 9-3 nonconference win.

Senior goalie had give saves between the posts for the Golden Bears. Meghan Corso, Paige Lorenz and Grace Reynolds each scored once for California.

In the second game of the day, it was the Golden Bears who established an early and overpowering lead. Leading by one at the end of the first quarter, 3-2, Cal shut out the Sun Devil offense and scored four goals of its own in the second stanza to take a 7-2 lead into the break. ASU came out of halftime fired up and outscored the Bears in first and only period of the game, 3-1. With an 8-5 edge at the beginning of the final quarter of regulation, California extended its lead with three goals to Arizona State's two to take the game, 11-7.

Sophomore utility Darby Anderson had a game high of four goals against the Sun Devils, which was the most she has scored in one game this year. Sophomore two-meter Grace Reynolds chipped in two goals and five other Golden Bears - Corso, Katya Eadington, Molly Hayes, Stephanie Schnugg and Erin Scully - contributed one each. Stuart grabbed seven saves for the Bears.

The Stanford Invitational concludes tomorrow with an 8 a.m. game against No. 3 Stanford and an afternoon game that is to be decided.
