Gimbutis Wins 100 Free, Leads Top Relay at NCAA Prelims

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - California sophomore Rolandas Gimbutis tied Arizona's Simon Burnett for first place in the 100-yard freestyle preliminary on Saturday at the 2005 NCAA Championships, held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Gimbutis and Burnett swam a 42.49, while Golden Bears senior Duje Draganja was third in a time of 42.53. Gimbutis also led off Cal's winning 400 freestyle relay, which swam a 2:51.73 to reach tonight's final. Junior Milorad Cavic, freshman Garrett Wagner and sophomore Jonas Tilly joined Gimbutis on the relay.

Gimbutis' winning time in the 100 free was three hundredths of a second from tying the pool record of 42.46, set by Michigan's Gustavo Borges in 1994. Tilly qualified for the 100 free consolation final by placing 13th in 43.23 for Cal, which stands in fourth place on the final day of the national meet.

Junior Henrique Barbosa placed eighth in 1:57.01 to qualify for tonight's final in the 200 breaststroke, while senior teammate Caleb Rowe reached the consolation final by taking 10th in 1:57.29. Alabama's Vladislav Polyakov won the race in 1:55.35.

Cal freshman Mark Eckert qualified for the consolation final in the 200 backstroke by finishing 12th in a time of 1:44.00 in the prelim. Florida's Ryan Lochte won the prelim in a pool-record 1:40.60.

Bears sophomore Patrick O'Neil took 14th in the 200 butterfly in 1:45.86 to reach tonight's consolation final. Kentucky's Daniel Cruz and Michigan Davis Tarwater tied for first with a pool record 1:43.40.

Cal's Louie Gagnet placed 10th in the preliminaries of the platform diving competition with 473.20 points. Only the top eight advance to the finals tonight. Texas A&M's Eric Sehn grabbed the eighth spot with 480.65.

Tonight's finals, which will wrap up the 2005 NCAA Championships, begin at 7 p.m. CT.
