LOS ALAMITOS, CALIF. - The No. 3 Cal men's water polo team outscored No. 6 Pacific, 5-1, in the fourth period to pull out an 11-9 victory over the Tigers Saturday (Oct. 1) in the second round of the SoCal Invitational at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.
Down 8-6 going into the final eight minutes, five different Cal players scored in the fourth period. Sophomore Collin Smith broke a 9-9 tie with a score at 3:44 left in the contest, and then senior Cory Nasoff sealed the win with a goal at 1:47 remaining.
Other Bears who scored in the fourth quarter included seniors Luka Saponjic and Charlie Steffens, and sophomore Hunter Gettelfinger. Junior goalie Justin Parsons was outstanding with 14 saves, including four blocks in the final period.
"This match was a great team effort against a very strong team," said Cal coach Kirk Everist. "We had five different players score in the fourth period and Justin Parsons played great in the goal. It was a nice comeback win."
Cal will next play No. 2-ranked UCLA in the tournament semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2. The 9-1 Bears' only defeat this season was a 6-5 loss to the Bruins in the Sept. 18 semifinals of the NorCal Invitational in Stockton.
