Cal head coach Joanne Boyle
On the team's performance:
"I thought it was a good game for us. In general, we needed to come back strong off Chico State. Even though we beat Chico State, it was very, very sloppy. So we really focused on our defense and our transition in this game. I thought in the first half, we did a really good job of pushing the ball and getting the looks we wanted early. I thought we did a much better job defensively. We had some breakdowns in the first part of the second half on defensive communication and lazy turnovers. But other than that, I thought it was a good game for us."
On if the defense will be the team's focus:
"I'm a defensive coach. I've always preached that and played that way and watched people play. I just feel like you have to have that. There are games when the ball's not going to go in the basket, so you have to be able to play defense and rebound."
On spreading playing time:
"We had Lauren [Greif] running the post position so that's depth right there. It was good. It helped out to get Ashley [Walker] 20-25 minutes and getting [Alexis Gray-Lawson] 20-25 minutes. That's all we want to do here in the preseason, to get have them gain minutes but not start wearing them down. I know I've said it a million times, but hopefully [Devanei Hampton] is coming back this week. She's going to be on the court a little bit, and we'll see how that goes. If we're healthy in a month, and we're good to go, and we're strong, then these are great minutes for everybody to have to play. It will only help us down the road."

On having two players out with injury:
"It makes our guards a lot stronger. We're seeing a lot of the rotations that usually wouldn't happen if everybody was healthy. With people sitting out, it's helping everybody else to be a lot stronger. So when everyone else is back, we'll be a lot stronger as a team."
On if the team is seeing dividends of its condition:
"Definitely. I think last year, we definitely would not have played the defensive game that we did today. Last year, when I came back, I definitely couldn't get up and down the floor and try to play the defenses we play and the entire press that we're doing this year. Definitely the conditioning is coming into play. I didn't think it would but it's helping."
