BERKELEY - The No. 1-ranked California men's swimming team improved its dual meet record to 4-0 with a 113-83 victory over Cal State Bakersfield Saturday (Feb. 5) at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears won the opening 400 medley relay and had six different individual event champs before swimming the final four events as exhibition.
Cal won the meet's first event, the 400 medley relay, behind the swims of junior Robert Sullivan, sophomore Trevor Hoyt, senior Guy Barnea and senior Graeme Moore (3:19.08). The Bears then went 1-2-3 in the 200 free with freshman Jeremy Bagshaw placing first (1:41.03), junior Isaac Howell second (1:41.64) and sophomore Tommy Dowley third (1:42.19).
Cal went 1-2 in the 50 free with senior Alex Cushing winning with a time of 20.71, and sophomore Dana Foster touching in at second with a time of 20.84. The Bears had a 1-2-3 placing in the 200 IM with senior Martti Aljand winning in a time of 1:50.45, senior Andrew Godbe finishing second (1:51.48) and junior Nolan Koon touching third (1:52.31).
Other 1-2-3 finishes for Cal included the 100 free in which freshman Marcin Tarczynski won in 45.14, senior Josh Daniels was second in 45.52 and freshman Shayne Fleming was third at 46.15. Sophomore standout Tom Shields led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.35, while sophomore Ben Hinshaw was second (1:51.61) and freshman Sam Metz was third (1:54.04).
The next dual meet competition for the Bears will be Saturday, Feb. 19 when they host Bay Area rival and No. 2 ranked Stanford beginning at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
