Berkeley - Cal cornerback and return specialist Deltha O'Neal posted an eye-opening 4.38 time in the 40-yard-dash conducted by pro scouts on the Cal campus Wednesday afternoon.
O'Neal participated in the overall weight testing, speed and agility drills conducted by NFL scouts at Cal. He was one of 10 Cal players to go through the testing. Others were Jerry DeLoach, Pete Destefano, Drae Harris, Damian Marzett, Keith Miller, Jeremiah Parker, Sekou Sanyika, Mawuko Tugbenyoh and Joshua White. Matt Beck did not participate in the drills, but said he would in a second round of testing next Wednesday.
O'Neal's time in the 40 is believed to be a huge factor in where he may get drafted. One pro defensive back coach who wished to remain anonymous said, "He made himself a million dollars today. Speed was the main question on him and that time seems to answer those questions."
O'Neal now has elevated himself into a prime candidate to be a first round draft choice.
Sekou Sanyika's times were not available, but he did comment after the drills that he was "happy" with his times and his performance.
