BERKELEY - The University of California baseball team (12-10) will be looking to get back on the winning track when it returns home for a non-conference game against Fresno State (13-11), Tuesday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who have been on the road for the past seven games, most recently competed against No. 1-ranked Arizona State in Tempe, losing a 3-2 heartbreaker last Sunday.
Admission for the Fresno State-Cal game will be free. The game can be viewed on Gametracker on calbears.com, and can be heard on KALX 90.7 FM.
Starting on the mound Tuesday for Cal will be senior left-hander Chris Petrini, who finished 4-3 last season with a 3.98 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 43.0 innings. Petrini ended the 2009 season on a high note when he threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout (6-0) of USC. In that game he only yielded one walk and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts against the Trojans. In his most recent outing, Petrini threw 4.2 innings with four hits, three runs, one walk and five strikeouts March 23 at San Francisco.
Cal currently has a .327 team batting average, fourth in the Pac-10. The Bears are also second in the league in doubles (59); and third in triples (10), home runs (20) and total bases (403). Individually, sophomore catcher Chadd Krist is batting .412 and is tied for first in the conference in doubles (11), second with a .765 slugging percentage and third in home runs (five).
Another top hitter for the Bears is junior All-Pac-10 first baseman/outfielder Mark Canha. Canha is currently on a 13-game hitting streak and is batting .365 with five doubles, three home runs and team-high 26 RBI (fifth in the Pac-10)..
On the mound, Cal pitchers have tallied five shutouts this year and feature talented starters Erik Johnson, Justin Jones and Dixon Anderson. Johnson is 3-1 with a 2.96 ERA and has 26 strikeouts in 27.1 innings. The sophomore right-hander started the year without giving up an earned run in his first 19.0 innings. Freshman left-hander Jones has been equally impressive with a 4-2 record and a 3.33 ERA. He also has 40 strikeouts (seventh in the conference) in a Pac-10-leading 46.0 innings. Sophomore right-hander Anderson is 2-1 with a 3.44 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. He recently limited the top-ranked Sun Devils to one earned run in 7.1 innings.
After hosting Fresno State Tuesday, Cal will entertain Pac-10 foe Arizona, April 1-3, at Evans Diamond. The No. 18-ranked (Collegiate Baseball) Wildcats are 20-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Thursday and Friday's game times are 2:30 p.m., and Saturday's contest will be at 1 p.m.
