BERKELEY - Below are selected quotes from Cal head coach Tom Holmoe's weekly football media luncheon. Cal visits Fresno State this Saturday night. Kickoff is at 7:15 p.m. and the game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
On Fresno State
"They've (Fresno State) been looking forward to this one for a number of years. They're a good team, and as you look at them, playing Ohio State and UCLA, they do some things on both sides of the ball and special teams that gave both Ohio State and UCLA fits. As you look at the tapes and prepare to play them, you realize that they're a very good team."
Update on center Reed Diehl and the offensive line
"Reed Diehl will come back this week. We'll see today in practice how much he'll be able to play, but he's cleared to go out into practice in full speed and full pads. And that's going to determine how we play the rest of our line. Nolan Bluntzer played quite a bit at center last week, and Marvin Philip played some at center, as well. We could always play Marvin or Nolan at the guard if the other one's playing. Robert Truhitte is a guy that started the first two games and he's been in there. Now that (guard Brandon) Ludwig is gone (sprained ankle), one of those guys will have to play the other guard more than likely if Reed doesn't play. Now if Reed plays, then you have Truhitte and Marvin and Nolan being able to play the other guard."
On Cal's linebackers
"At inside linebacker, we're still trying to find the right combination. We've had a couple of guys that have played well. I think Matt Nixon has played well and Chris Ball has played well, playing at the same position. We're still trying to find the right guys to play that "Mike" position. (OLB Scott) Fujita has been very, very good. Calvin Hosey will get back this week, and that'll be an advantage for us. We thought we were going to get him back last week and at the end of the week, he just kind of took a turn for the worse."
On the secondary
"I think Chidi (Iwuoma) has played very well. He's played as consistent as we thought he would. Harold Pearson has been a nice surprise. I guess you would anticipate that LaShaun (Ward) and Jemeel (Powell) would be guys that would be out there because of their speed and athletic ability, but Harold really is a smarter player. He's played a solid corner for us out there. So it allows us to keep Jemeel and LaShaun in as the two nickel guys. They play a lot in that role, but they've got to elevate their game. We need those two guys to be pressing to be on the field more, and both those guys should be in contention for a starting position soon, and thus far they haven't been."
On the status of Chidi Iwuoma on kickoff and punt returns this week
"He (Iwuoma) won't return kicks for sure, and probably won't return punts. So, we'll have Joe Echema and Jemeel Powell and James Bethea all getting more work during the week on punt and kickoff returns."
