BERKELEY, Calif. - In a vote of Pac-10 women's basketball media members, five players have been named to the 2007-08 preseason All- Pac-10 team, including Devanei Hampton and Ashley Walker of California, Jayne Appel and Candice Wiggins of Stanford, and Briann January of Arizona State.
Hampton, the first Cal women's basketball player ever to be selected as Pac-10 Player of the Year, finished her award-winning year seventh in the Pac-10 in scoring (16.6 ppg), third in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and fifth in field goal percentage (.528). Named to the 2007-08 Wade Trophy Watch List, Hampton owns the third-highest career scoring average in Cal history (16.1 ppg).The Oakland, Calif., product was named a 2007-08 second-team preseason All-American by The Sporting News and was a third-team choice by CSTV.com.
Walker led the Pac-10 with 12 double-doubles as a sophomore, ranking third in the league in scoring (17.3 ppg), first in rebounding (8.7 rpg), third in field goal percentage (.532) and fourth in blocked shots (1.34). A 2006-07 All-Pac-10 selection, Walker led the team in scoring 15 times last year, notching 10 20-point games. Appel, the 2007 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention accolades in her first collegiate campaign as she finished the season 12th in the Pac-10 in scoring (13.2 ppg), seventh in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.538). Averaging less than 20 minutes per game, Appel led the Conference with 61 blocks, establishing a single-season Stanford record.
January earned 2006-07 All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors as she finished third in the Pac-10 in steals (2.1 spg), fourth in assists (4.0 apg), fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.67) and sixth in free throw percentage (.817). January scored in double figures 17 times, including 13 times in ASU's last 19 games.
Wiggins, the 2005 and 2006 Pac-10 Player of the Year, is a three-time Kodak/WBCA All-American and enters her senior season as one of the most decorated players in Pac-10 history. On virtually every preseason watch list, Wiggins finished sixth in the Conference in scoring (16.9 ppg), second in 3-point field goal percentage (.441) and first in 3-point field goals made (82) in 2006-07, despite missing five games because of injury.
