BERKELEY - The fourth-ranked California women's tennis team kick of its 1999 dual match schedule Wednesday afternoon with a resounding 8-1 victory over Fresno State at the Hellman Tennis Center on the Cal campus. The Golden Bears, who have never lost to Fresno State in the sport of women's tennis, improved to 27-0 all time versus the Bulldogs with the victory.

Senior team captain Amanda Augustus, a mainstay in the No. 1 slot during her Cal career, made her first appearance at No. 2 since her sophomore year and got the ball rolling early for the Bears with an easy 6-3, 6-2 straight-set victory over Kim Niggemeyer. Fresno State quickly evened things up when No. 17-ranked Dora Djlianova took out Anita Kurimay in the No. 1 position 6-4, 6-2, to square the match at 1-1.

However, Djilianova's win would turnout to be the lone bright spot on the afternoon for the Bulldogs as Cal swept the remaining four singles spots. Amy Jensen, Francesca La'O and Stephanie Tibbits claimed straight-set victories at the Nos. 3, 4 and 6 positions, respectively, to give Cal a commanding 4-1 lead. The only drama during the singles action was provided by Cal's Karoline Borgersen and FSU's Kandiss Creighton, who did battle for three sets before Borgersen finally clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

The Bears quickly put the finishing touches on the season-opening dual win by sweeping the doubles portion of the match, highlighted by defending NCAA doubles champs Augustus and Jensen's 8-6 victory over Djilianova and Liesl Fichtbauer on court 1.

The California women's tennis team returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29th, when the Bears entertain the University of Washington. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Cal's Hellman Tennis center.
