BERKELEY – The No. 5 California men’s gymnastics team returns to action on Feb. 18, travelling across the bay to No. 5 Stanford in the fifth meet of the year featuring both teams. The Golden Bears won the first (Jan 13) and the most recent (Feb. 12) meet with the Cardinal, but Stanford topped Cal in the other two meetings (Jan. 21 and 28), with the home team winning each encounter. The Bears hope to change their luck at the farm this weekend, with Donothan Bailey leading the way after his all-around win last weekend earned him MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors.
Donothan Bailey is MPSF Gymnast of the Week
Junior Donothan Bailey took home his first all-around title of the season with a score of 87.300, making him the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week. Bailey, ranked third nationally in the all-around, topped both Oklahoma’s No.1-ranked Jake Dalton and Stanford’s No. 2-ranked Eddie Penev en route to the title. In addition to the all-around, Bailey also finished first on parallel bars with a 15.000. This is Bailey’s second Gymnast of the Week honor of the 2012 campaign.
Last Week in the Gym
The Bears finished second in a tri-meet, at which they hosted No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 5 Stanford. The Sooners narrowly edged the Bears for the win, 351.600-349.400, despite Cal winning four of the six events. The Bears placed first on pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Donothan Bailey took home wins in the all-around and parallel bars, while Glen Ishino took first on pommel horse and Jacob Jizrawi won the high bar. It was the Bears’ second consecutive second-place finish in a tri-meet.
