BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Leila Khoury won the all-around title and placed first on three of four events as the California women's gymnastics opened the season with a pair of easy victories over UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis Friday night at the Recreational Sports Facility on the Cal campus.
The Golden Bears, who have been decimated by injury during the preseason, easily outdistanced the competition with a final combined score of 188.350. UC Davis came in second, scoring 182.375, while UCSB was a distant third with a score of 161.425. Though not outstanding, the tri-meet was a solid opener for Cal, which bettered its 1998 opener by a full 2.525 and continues to progress under the direction of second-year head coach Trina Tinti.
Cal's dominance was apparent from the first rotation, as the Bears swept the vault to take an early lead. In addition to Khoury, who posted 9.725, sophomore Paula Chang and freshman Lindsay Baker each notched personal-best scores of 9.575 to tie for second.
Khoury (9.575), sophomore Pari Olver (9.550) and sophomore Helne Kenny (9.550) combined to give Cal its second sweep of the meet and senior Emily Bails scored a 9.775 to earn the event title on beam as Cal's lead reached a commanding 3.925 heading into the floor exercise. Khoury was once again led the way on floor with a 9.750, while Bails (9.700) and Baker (9.500) placed second and third, respectively, to give Cal its third event sweep of the meet.
The Golden Bears return to action on Friday, Jan. 22, when Cal hosts Stanford at the RSF. Meet time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
