LONG BEACH, Calif. - Fifth-ranked California posted five NCAA B qualifying times on Thursday night and moved into sixth place on the first day of the Arena Invitational at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. The Golden Bears collected 232 points after the meet's first night of finals. Top-ranked Stanford is in first place with 1,012.5 points.
"This meet has provided us with a great opportunity to see where we are as a team," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "There are a number of different teams at the meet, and we are all coming in with different rest, suits and approaches. It is important for us to stay on our path. We are definitely seeing some good things and some things we need to improve on."
Cal opened the evening session by claiming second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of freshman Nathalie Lindborg, junior Colleen Fotsch, junior Katherine Raatz and junior Liv Jensen swam an NCAA consideration time of 1:31.63.
Junior Shelley Harper reached the championship final in the 500-yard freestyle and swam a time of 4:53.31. Senior Katie Kastes took second place in the consolation final and finished 10th place overall with an NCAA B time of 4:51.37.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Cal sophomore Caitlin Leverenz posted an NCAA B time of 1:57.90 to place third.
Jensen placed fourth in the 50 free with an NCAA B time of 22.56. Lindborg also reached the championship final, taking eighth in a time of 23.23.
The Arena Invitational continues on Friday with the following events: the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800-free relay. The three-day meet ends on Saturday.
