BLOOMINGTON, IND. - Highlighted by a second-place finish in the one-meter diving by junior Sam Helvie, and a third-place finish by sophomore Troy Nissen in the 100 breast, the No. 7-ranked Cal men's swimming and diving team competed in eight events Friday at the Hoosierland Open, held at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington, Ind. The Golden Bears also placed fourth in the 800 free relay and sixth in the 200 medley relay.
Helvie trailed only Indiana's Taylor Roberts (358.75), scoring 342.15 in the one-meter board, while Cal freshmen Taylor Dehn and Tom Henninger placed eighth and ninth, respectively, with scores of 278.10 and 267.35. Nissen was third in the 100 breast with a time of 56.78, and freshman Nick Ferrif was sixth with a time of 57.68.
The Bears' 800 free relay team of junior Ian Lentz, freshman Andrew Godbe, senior Michael Jafari and freshman Daniel Smith was fourth with a time of 6:59.20 after swimming 6:50.00 in the prelims. Cal's 200 medley relay (Lentz, Nissen, junior Dash Rothberg, freshman Alex Cushing) placed sixth with a mark of 1:34.17 after swimming 1:31.00 in the prelims. Other top Cal individual finishes included Lentz placing seventh in the 400 IM (4:07.25), Smith finishing eighth in the 200 free (1:43.93), Rothberg placing ninth in the 100 back (51.53) and Cushing finishing 10th in the 100 fly (51.04).
The Hoosierland Open concludes Saturday, Nov. 17 with the platform diving, 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
