SAN DIEGO - The No. 3 California men's soccer team was defeated by San Diego State, 1-0, this afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. The Golden Bears are coming off a 0-2 road trip to Southern California that began Pac-10 play. Cal moves to 7-2-1, 0-2 in the Pac-10, while San Diego State improves to 7-0-2, 1-0-1 in Pac-10 play.
Both teams went scoreless throughout 89 minutes, with Cal taking seven shots and the Aztecs tallying 16. Sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano recorded three shots for the Bears this afternoon, and tabbed one shot on goal.
It looked as though the game was headed into overtime, until SDSU freshman midfielder Dennis Sanchez scored for the Aztecs with two seconds remaining in regulation. San Diego State's goalkeeper, Tally Hall, threw the ball down the field to senior forward Matt Couch. Couch passed the ball to Sanchez, who found the open net past Cal's keeper, Eric Kronberg.
Kronberg recorded three saves for the Bears, while San Diego State's Hall, tabbed four for the Aztecs. Three yellow caution cards were issued Sunday, with two going to San Diego State and Cal receiving one. Sanchez received one in the 13th minute, while the Pac-10 Player of the Week, Kraig Chiles, received one in the 62nd minute. Freshman midfielder Tyler Barry received one for Cal in the 74th minute.
Cal stays close to home next weekend when it faces Stanford, Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at Maloney Field.
