WOODLAND, CALIF. - Cal senior goalie Nate Bennett has been named the Oct. 25 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mikasa Player of the Week after leading the No. 2-ranked Golden Bears to victories over No. 7 UC Irvine and No. 10 UC Davis last weekend. In Cal's 9-2 MPSF victory over the Anteaters, Bennett recorded a career-high 20 saves as the Bears shutout UC Irvine for nearly the first 21 minutes of the match - the Anteaters finally scored with 34 seconds left in the third period. He finished with 25 saves for the weekend as he gathered five more saves in three periods in Cal's 15-7 non-conference win at UC Davis. Bennett now has 123 saves on the season, 434 career saves, and is second in the MPSF with a 5.28 goal against average.
Bennett's selection is the second MPSF Player of the Week accolade for the Bears this season as junior John Mann was the Oct. 4 Co-MPSF Player of the Week. Bennett was selected as an MPSF Player of the Week last season as well, earning the honor Nov. 21, 2004 after recording 12 saves in Cal's 6-5 victory over Stanford in The Big Splash.
Cal returns to action Thursday, Oct. 27 when it hosts Pacific in a 7 p.m. MPSF match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears then host Pepperdine in a non-conference match on Saturday, Oct. 29 at noon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
