SAN DIEGO - The No. 6 California women's water polo team lost to Stanford, 8-6, Friday afternoon in the second round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament. With the loss, the seven-seed Golden Bears fall to 17-10. Grace Reynolds paced the Bears with three goals and senior keeper Heather Stuart grabbed six saves. The rivals traded goals to open the game and tied with two goals apiece at the end of the first quarter. Each team only managed one goal in the second stanza to head into the halftime break knotted, 3-3.
Stanford outscored Cal in the third period, 3-1, to earn a 6-4 lead at the end of three complete quarters. The Bears opened the final period in regulation with a goal to which the Cardinal responded immediately return its two-goal lead, 7-5. Stanford added another goal, shortly thereafter, and the Bears tacked on a final goal of their own but it was too little, too late. Neither team scored for the remaining two minutes and Stanford came away victorious for the third time this season, 8-6.
