BERKELEY - Andrew Wiedeman recorded five points, including the opening-day, game-winning goal, to open the 2008 campaign this past weekend, making the sophomore forward the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
In California's 3-1 victory over UC Riverside last Friday to open the season, Wiedeman scored two goals less than four minutes apart to give the Bears a commanding 3-0 lead.
On Sunday against highly ranked Maryland, Wiedeman tallied an assist on the late game-winning goal to give Cal a 1-0 win and a 2-0 start to the campaign. Maryland was ranked in the top 10 in four different national polls, with the highest ranking at No. 3.
The men's soccer team's national ranking jumped from No. 13 to No. 8 in the latest poll.
