BERKELEY - Junior Alex Sutton hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifting No. 7 California to a 2-0 win over No. 6 Oregon State at Levine-Fricke Field, Sunday. The Golden Bears improve to 35-4 overall and 4-1 in Pac-10 play. The Beavers fall to 29-6 and 2-4.
With the score tied 0-0 in the bottom of the seventh, senior Emily Friedman led off with a single to right center. Sophomore Chloe Kloezeman then entered the game as a pinch runner. Senior Haley Woods popped up to the shortstop for one out. Sutton followed with her third home run of the season, sending Kloezeman home.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the game. Entering the seventh inning, the Bears and Beavers each had just two hits. Oregon State tallied one hit in the top of the seventh, and the Beavers left one runner on base after a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts ended their at-bat.
Sutton, who finished 2-for-3, had a strong day at the plate as she also belted a double in the second inning. Sophomore Katie Vickers had the Bears' other hit, a one-out single in the fifth.
Senior Kristina Thorson improved to 25-3 on the season, striking out 13 of 26 batters.
