STANFORD - The No. 24 California men's soccer team beat Davidson, 2-1, Friday night at Maloney Field in the Stanford Invitational. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, freshman Andrew Wiedeman scored twice in the second half to give the Golden Bears the victory. Cal improved to 3-2-1, while Davidson fell to 1-5.
Wiedeman's first score came on a deflection into the goal in the 56th minute. Fellow freshman A.J. Soares picked up the assist. Wiedeman's second goal, the game winner for Cal, came in the 88th minute. He beat the keeper on a shot to the lower near post. Senior Andrew Jacobson and freshman Demitrius Omphroy recorded assists on that goal. Jacobson also led the Bears with four shots.
Davidson's Robby Hoak scored his team's lone goal in the 27th minute of the first half with assists from Machel Turner and Alex Caskey.
The Bears square off against Princeton in their second game of the Stanford Invitational, Sunday at 12 p.m. at Maloney Field.
