TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Molly Hayes tallied a game-high four goals but it was not enough for the No. 4 Golden Bears on the road, and they dropped the 8-7 conference decision to No. 8 Arizona State at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. With the loss, Cal falls to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while ASU improves to 13-9 and 3-4 in the MPSF.
The Sun Devils scored in the first ten seconds of the game on a goal by Addison McGrath. Cal answered with goals from sophomore defender Grace Reynolds and Hayes to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Bears opened the second stanza with a goal from Hayes to take a 3-2 lead. ASU went on a 5-0 scoring run of the next 16 minute to build an insurmountable lead.
The Golden Bear came within two, 7-5, in the fourth quarter, but McGrath's third goal of the game extended ASU's lead to three with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. The Bears scored twice thanks to goals from sophomore Meghan Corso and Hayes in the final two minutes, but it was not enough.
The Bears return home to Berkeley to host Cal State Northridge next week.
