GOLETA, CALIF. - Twelve different players scored for the Golden Bears, including four goals by sophomore Aleksa Saponjic and three goals from freshman Colin Mulcahy and sophomore Graham Nesbit, as Cal water polo (8-3) dominated Air Force, 22-4, Saturday (Sept. 29) in a first round match of the SoCal Invitational in Goleta. The Bears will next play UC Irvine, a 13-6 winner over UC Davis, in a second-round match at 5:40 p.m. Saturday.
Cal scored five goals in the first three periods and notched six goals in the fourth period for the commanding win. Besides the scoring of Saponjic, Mulcahy and Nesbit, redshirt freshman Thomas Agramonte added two goals and had a team-high four assists. Senior captain Marin Balarin and junior Hunter Gettelfinger also had two goals apiece, while junior Collin Smith paced the Bears with five steals.
Cal goalie Michael Boggan had 10 saves and three assists on the day as well. It was the Bears second big win over Air Force this season, defeating the Falcons, 19-2, back on Sept. 15 in the first round match of the NorCal Invitational. Cal will be facing UC Irvine for the second time this season. On Sept. 15 in the second round of the NorCal Invite at Stanford, the Bears defeated the Anteaters, 14-7.
