ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND - The No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team captured its first two matches of the Navy Open, defeating Bucknell, 11-2, Saturday morning, before topping No. 12-ranked St. Francis, 11-8, Saturday evening at LeJeune Hall Pool at the Navel Academy campus.
In the Bucknell victory, the Golden Bears were led by junior All-American John Mann's four goals, and two goals by sophomore attacker Mike Hayes. Junior Brian Kinsel, junior Andrija Vasiljevic, sophomore Michael Sharf, sophomore Zac Monsees and true freshman Shea Buckner also tallied goals for Cal. Vasiljevic added five steals in the match and junior Brian Bacharach had four assists. Senior goalie Nate Bennett finished the first contest of the year with one steal and one assist.
Against St. Francis, Cal jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period and cruised to the win. Bacharach, Mann and sophomore Jeff Tyrrell led the Bears with two goals apiece, while Vasiljevic, Buckner, Sharf, Hayes and Monsees added single scores. Hayes and junior Marty Matthies helped seal the win with four steals apiece and goalie Bennett added two saves, three assists and three steals. Redshirt freshman goalie Mark Vacquier saw his first collegiate action and had one block and a steal.
Cal next plays an exhibition match against Water Polo Planet Euro at 8:30 a.m., before taking on host Navy at 3:30 p.m. Sunday to conclude the Navy Open.
