Junior David Eaton led the eighth-ranked California men's gymnastics team Friday evening at the Winter Cup Challenge, finishing 12th in the all-around (50.625) out of 80 gymnasts. The Golden Bears are represented by Eaton, seniors Cody Moore and Aaron Floyd and sophomore Graham Ackerman in the Winter Cup, held at the Sports Center in Las Vegas, Nev, that features the elite gymnasts from across the country.

The top eight athletes on each apparatus from Friday's sessions will compete again tonight for Event Championship Titles.

Competing as an exhibition-only gymnast, Eaton finished sixth overall on the high bar (8.925), a personal best for the year. Eaton also notched personal season-high scores on the floor (8.600), horse (8.850) and vault (8.950).

Five-time All-American Moore had an all-around score of 49.650, finishing 18th overall, and will be competing in tonight's Event Championships for the high bar, after tying for eighth (8.800). Last year at the Winter Cup, Moore placed fourth in the all-around with a score of 52.85, receiving a spot on the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Team.

Floyd and Ackerman did not compete in each of the six apparatuses. Floyd's top finish was on the rings (8.150), landing in 29th. His 8.550 on the vault was his highest score of the evening. Ackerman tied for fourth on the floor (9.150) and will be competing in tonight's floor Event Championships.

The Top two finishers in the all-around, Brett McClure (Chevron) and Jason Gatson (Chevron) were named to the 2003 U.S. National Team. These gymnasts will be eligible to represent the United States in international competitions leading up to the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in June. The Winter Cup also serves as the final evaluation for gymnasts seeking to represent the U.S. at the 2003 VISA American Cup March 1 in Fairfax, VA.

The two-day meet concludes tonight with the individual event finals beginning at 8 p.m.
