Berkeley, Calif. - The Bears ended their season-opening weekend with two more wins, 7-1 and 9-2, over the St. Mary's Gaels. Kelly Anderson and Kristina Thorson both picked up their second win in as many days, both improving to 2-0 on the season. With the wins, Cal improves to 4-0 on the season and is a career 36-0 against St. Mary's.
With the score notched at 0-0 in the fifth inning of Game one, Cal's bats finally came alive. Kristen Bayless doubled in Roni Rodriguez to even the score. In the sixth, Vicky Galindo was knocked in by a Kaleo Eldredge single. Haley Woods followed with her first triple of the season. Jessica Pamanian continued the rally with a single, to put Cal comfortably ahead 4-0.
After a St. Mary's solo home run in the sixth, Eldredge had her own chance to trot around the bases when she smacked a ball out of the park, with two runners aboard. Anderson cruised with the 7-1 lead and closed out the game.
Game two was more of the same for the Bears. Cal put together an explosive five-run third inning, highlighted by Rodriguez's two run single. Chelsea Spencer added a two run double in the seventh inning to bring the final tally to nine runs across for Cal.
Thorson pitched five strong innings, allowing four hits and one run. Sarah Adams saw her first action of the season to close things out. She gave up two hits and one run in two innings of work.
Cal hits the field again next Wednesday, February 4 at 12 noon, when the Bears travel to take on San Jose St. in another doubleheader.
