WOODLAND, CALIF. - California junior attacker Collin Smith has been named the KAP7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week after leading the No. 3-ranked Golden Bears to five victories last weekend at the Princeton Invitaional, including two versus Top 20 foes, it was announced late Monday (Sept. 10) by MPSF commissioner Al Beaird.
Smith, a 6-1, 188-pound standout from Carlsbad, Calif., was an offensive force for third ranked Cal, scoring six goals in a 17-4 victory over MIT during the final day (Sept. 9) of the Princeton Invitational. The Bears improved to 5-0 on the season and outscored their opponents, 82-21, in their east coast trip. Smith finished the five matches over the weekend with 19 goals, averaging 3.8 goals per match. He also paced the Bears with four goals each in Cal's victories over two ranked opponents on Sept. 7 - No. 20 St. Francis and No. 13 Princeton.
The Bears next compete at the NorCal Invitational, Sept. 15-16 (schedule TBA), at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Complex. The NorCal Invite will feature the top teams in the nation, including No. 1-ranked USC, the four-time defending NCAA champions, and No. 2-ranked UCLA. UCLA had upended Cal, 7-6 in overtime, in last year's semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.
