After capturing fourth place at the Pac-10 championships last week, the Cal men's golf team has earned one of 18 berths in the NCAA West Regional Tournament, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
The tournament will be contested May 14-16 at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., and the top nine teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA national championships May 27-30 in Albuquerque, N.M.
The regional berth is the fifth for Cal since 1990 and third in the past four years. The Bears best finish came in 1995 when Cal qualified for the national tournament and ended the year sixth in the country. Last season, the Bears placed 14th in the West Regional.
Cal is one of seven teams from the Pac-10 to earn a spot in the regionals this year, joining Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, Washington, USC and Oregon. The other schools in the West Region are UNLV, Pacific, New Mexico State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, New Mexico, BYU, Colorado State, Texas-El Paso, Nevada and Fresno State.
Two other regionals - East and Central - will be contested across the country with a total of 30 teams qualifying for the national tournament.
Individually, the Bears are led by junior Dan Arroyo, who is averaging 72.6 per round this season. He is coming off a tie for second at the Pac-10 tournament. In addition, junior Dan Coyle and freshman Adam Ainbinder are both averaging 74.0 per round.
