Laing Fires School Record to Lead Cal to Fifth at ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior Vikki Laing fired a school-record two-under-par 214 to lead 20th-ranked California to a fifth-place finish at the highly-competitive PING/ASU Invitational Sunday at Karsten Golf Course. The Golden Bears carded a 293 in the final round to finish with a three-day score of 890. Third-ranked Tulsa took top honors after carding a tournament low 286 to finish at seven-over 871.

Rounding out the top five in the 15-team event were host No. 11 Arizona State (877), No. 8 Arizona (881) and No. 18 UCLA (883). The Bears finished ahead of several teams ranked ahead of them - No. 4 Texas, No. 14 USC and No. 16 Washington.

Laing, who shot a 70 today, placed fourth in the individual race by breaking teammates Anne Walker and Sarah Huarte's previous 54-hole record by one stroke. Also in the top 15 for Cal was junior Ria Quiazon, who tied for 13th with a 221.

Arizona's Lorena Ochoa, the nation's No. 1 golfer, claimed medalist honors with a nine-under 207, four shots better than the second-place golfer, Arizona State's Jimin Kang.

Cal's final tune-up for the Pac-10 Championships is April 13-14 at the Peg Barnard Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course.
