BERKELEY, Calif. - California cruised through its first exhibition game of the 2004-05 season Wednesday night, defeating Baden Sports, 69-36, inside Haas Pavilion. Freshman center Jessica Lawson led all scorers with 17 points, adding five boards, four steals and a pair of blocks to her stat line in the process.

"The first thing that people don't see right away is that she makes all the difference in the world defensively," said California head coach Caren Horstmeyer of her new center, Lawson. "What I like also is her confidence and desire to score."

Cal appeared to be in control 10 minutes into the first half, allowing the Bears to sample a variety of player combinations on the floor, giving 10 of the 11 dressed at least 12 minutes of court time. Cal led 37-9 at the half and built a 45-point lead -- its biggest - at 63-18 with 9:48 left in the contest.

"It was a good start for us," said Horstmeyer. "We saw some things we thought we did well and some things we really need to work on. Having as many newcomers as we do, I was very pleased with the defensive effort, especially for three-quarters of the game."

Cal's freshmen took the opportunity to highlight what brought them to campus, with forward Krista Foster chipping in 10 points and collecting 11 rebounds and guard Seda Erdogan, the Bears' Turkish native, adding eight points, six of them from behind the arc.

The Bears shot 41 percent from the floor in the first half and 39 percent for the game, out-rebounding their opponents, 60-33. Senior center Khadijah Coakley tallied Cal's other double-double of the night, finishing with 11 points and 13 boards. Junior forward Renee Wright contributed nine points as a starter.

Alicia Heathcote, a forward who graduated from Washington in 2003, led Baden Sports with 11 points.

Cal plays its final exhibition game against the Bay Area Pro-Am Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in Haas Pavilion.
