BERKELEY - Cal center Shahar Gordon will miss the next 4-5 weeks due to an injury to his left knee, head coach Ben Braun announced Thursday.

Gordon, a 6-10 sophomore from Tel Aviv, Israel, will undergo arthroscopic surgery for a medial meniscus re-tear Friday morning. He had been feeling soreness in the knee for about a week and had an MRI last Friday (Dec. 10), which revealed the tear.

Gordon had surgery on the same knee for a similar injury last June while he was home in Israel, but doctors said the two injuries are unrelated.

"We will certainly miss Shahar's presence in the lineup," Braun said. "He was really playing well for us, and I hope he can get back to the court quickly. We'll have to rely on some of our other players to adjust while he is out."

Gordon has appeared in six of seven games this year, averaging 1.5 ppg and 0.8 rpg in 8.0 minutes per game. He scored a career-high seven points at Colorado Dec. 4.
